Healing Through Horses: Sarah's Journey

One of the teens at the Children's Attention Home has been attending horse therapy at Bright Side and has truly enjoyed the experience. Horse therapy, which combines working with horses and talk therapy, helps young people build emotional resilience and learn valuable coping skills.

Sarah*, a resident at the Children’s Attention Home, recently had the opportunity to participate in horse therapy at the Bright Side Youth Ranch. Throughout the weeks, Sarah built connections with her assigned horse, Brass, and within herself, helping her learn new coping skills.

Horse therapy, also known as equine-assisted therapy, is widely recognized for its mental health benefits, especially for teens. The bond between humans and horses helps individuals regulate their emotions and develop trust. Working with horses can also enhance social skills and improve self-confidence. It’s a hands-on approach to therapy that promotes physical and emotional healing, making it ideal for young people navigating trauma or difficult circumstances.

During the sessions, Sarah engages in a range of activities with Brass, like brushing, walking, and helping Brass with exercises. Every session is combined with talk therapy, giving Sarah a chance to express herself while building a relationship with her horse. She’s been fully engaged in every part of the process and always looks forward to her time at Bright Side Youth Ranch.

In reflecting on her experience, Sarah shared, "Horse therapy gave me the opportunity to express myself in a nontraditional way. It taught me the importance of bonding and connecting with others, even if it’s not with a person. I plan on using the skills I’ve learned at Bright Side in my relationships with my family and friends."

By working with Brass, Sarah learned valuable life skills like patience, empathy, and the importance of building trust. The sessions have also allowed her to explore her emotions in a safe space, fostering personal growth and resilience. She is developing healthier ways to manage her stress and emotions, tools that will benefit her well beyond her time at the Children’s Attention Home.

The generosity of our community and great partnerships with organizations like Bright Side Youth Ranch make unique opportunities, like horse therapy, possible for the youth in the Home’s care. Thank you to all who contribute to the well-being and development of children like Sarah and help them build a brighter future.
