Old McDonald Had A Farm

February 15, 2021

Recently, several scholars were able to take a field trip to Hy-Hope Farms, and Newberry College to learn about agriculture.

The scholars started the adventure with a quick history lesson from second generation farmer Mr. Doug Heydt. Mr. Heydt explained to the group the importance of farming, the business of it, the daily life of a farm hand, and how to be successful at working the land. He discussed the science of farming with the help of North Carolina A & T University Grad Student Ms. Logan Richardson. Together they discussed with the scholars how farming affects our daily lives, the various occupations needed on a farm, and how to young farmers are needed. Mr. Heydt later treated the group to delicious BBQ at Steelhorse Smokehouse in downtown Newberry. After lunch they explored the campus of Newberry College where the group ran a few routes on their famed football field.
