Spreading Her Wings

January 30, 2023

This month, one young lady struck out on her own. After living at the Home for two years, Janet* moved into her very own apartment! Thanks to a wonderful group of supporters, Janet* had everything on her list needed to make her new apartment feel like home.

Janet* came to live at the Children’s Attention Home in January of 2021. She had landed in Charlotte after living with her adoptive family was no longer an option. Soon after moving, Janet* realized she needed a place where she could work towards finishing high school and prepare for life on her own.

Janet* accomplished many major milestones while living at the Home. She got her first job, began saving money, worked towards her driver’s license, and finishing school. After two years, she accomplished her big goal – walking across the stage as a high school graduate!

As she embarked on the next big step in her journey, we asked Janet* about her experience:

What is something important that people should know about you?
“That I’m kind.”

What was your first impression of the Home?
“My first impressions were mixed emotions, but I was mainly sad of being in a group home.”

What accomplishments are you the most proud of?
“Being able to save money.”

What goals are you still working on?
“Right now, I’m still working on saving money, getting a car, and going back to school to earn my college degree.”

What are some of the challenges in your life you’ve had to overcome to get to this point?
“Learning how to accept feedback.”

What was the most challenging part about living at the Home?
“Sharing my personal space.”

What will you miss most about living at the Home?
“I will miss the people because they’re never rude.”

What are you most excited or worried about with your new apartment?
“I’m excited to have my own space, but I’m worried about traveling in a new location.”

What has been the hardest part about getting to this point?
“It was hard knowing that one day I would have to leave.”

Who are the people who have helped you get to where you are today?
“Mrs. Cathy, Ms. Kesha, Ms. TaKayla, and Ms. Ashley T.”

If you could sum up your time at the Home, what would you say?
“The Home is a great place to be at because the Home helps you accomplish your goals. The people are there to help you in a nice way.”
