Cozier cottages at Children's Attention Home thanks to Lutz Foundation

July 23, 2020
Rock Hill, S.C. - The Children's Attention Home recently completed the makeover of two cottages, thanks to a generous grant of $22,000 from The Herbert and Anna Lutz Foundation. The project to renovate all three cottages began last year with the renovation of the first cottage, completed also with support from the Lutz Foundation.

Many of the children and youth at the Home from foster care and the homeless youth come from neglectful situations, which includes the state of the home in which they were living.

Through the years, the Home has served many children from Chester removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect or abandonment. The trauma these children experience is often paralleled in the physical living conditions from which they were removed. These renovations allow the Home to provide a more “home-like” space for the children with new faux wood flooring, repainted bedrooms and living areas, and updated the bathrooms, including new tile floors.

“We are thrilled with the renovations to Morris cottage and Porterfield cottage, and the children living there are so excited,” said Executive Director, Emily Parrish. “After last year's makeover of Freeman cottage, the children in the other two cottages were eager to have their cottage updated as well. We are so grateful to the Lutz Foundation and all of our community sponsors and volunteers for giving all of our children such beautiful places to live.”

For many children, the Children's Attention Home is the first place where they feel safe, have a bed, or have a space to call their own. Youth often describe their first interactions with staff and other residents as welcoming, and the update of cottage spaces will allow the Home the physical environment to match the warmth of the people who care for them.
